ACC BOYS AND LADY CHARGERS BATTLE AT OAKHURST

9/1/2008 -

The ACC Cross Country teams ran an early season unofficial tune-up meet with Aurora Christian on Friday which has become a Charger-Eagle tradition for the past three years. The teams use the 2.0 mile loop distance as a prelude the regular season.  Both programs displayed potential talent in all 3 races!  The Varsity Boys race was led by Super Sophomre Jimmy Spencer who won in 10:22, followed closely by teammate Junior Dan Kottkamp in 10:30. John Cisneros was 4th in 10:40 and Garrett McCarthy went 11:00 for 6th. John Jochum took 8th in 11:25, with Sophomore Nolan McCue right on his tail (11:30, 9th). The Chargers survived a momentary scare when Senior Max Gilbert, running in the front pack, suffered an ankle strain before the 1 mile mark, and was abruptly pulled off the course by Coach Kerber. The good news is that Gilbert is expected to be back into action for the opening meet on Tuesday against Class 1A power Westmont. Coach Kerber claims that, "When we have everyone racing and healthy we look to have some potential this season! We have been tracking data on this loop since 2002, based on the times run on Friday: 10:14, 10:22, 10:30, 10:31, 10:40,11:08, 11:30, through normal uninterrupted training progression we should be able to have at least 8 guys under 16:40 for 3 miles at the end of the season!"

On the ladies side, ACC, as well as the rest of the field, chased AC Frosh stand-out Serena Olson who won in 12:20. Following her was Junior Natalie Perry in a PR of 12:44 and then following close was AC veteran Kaitlin Bellak and ACC soph Jacquelyn Nagel. Other Chargers in the top 10 were sophomre Allison Alosio, Junior Melissa Lindsay,  sophomore Alexis Anthony, and Freshman Jessica Nagel . Kerber stated that, "We have been a little bit depleted on this side of the program with some illness and key girls missing practices; hopefully this is a wake up call for certain individuals. If not, we have some young girls with potential that will step in and do a great job for us!"

In the Boys Frosh-Soph race, freshman stand-out Sam Schuette of Aurora Christian covered the course in 11:02, followed by Mikos Jiminez. A pack of Chargers led by freshman Alex Duncan 11:37, German Arroyo, Manny Sauceda, Arnulfo Olivia, and Max Abens were close behind.

ACC Boys, Nagel Impress!

8/22/2008-

The ACC Chargers and Lady Chargers ran their traditional early season 2.0 mile Time Trial at the Hurst on Friday. As the entire program trains towards progressing into race shape, a few things became apparent.  The coaching staff was very impressed with the efforts of the boys program this early. Max Gilbert, Jimmy Spencer, and Garrett McCarthy came across with literally a 1 second split in 10:29-10:30!  Gilbert returns as last season's no 1, Spencer has gone up 2 levels since last year, and if McCarthy continues to run like that for us look out! According to Coaches Villa and Kerber you can tell Garrett did some serious work this summer! John Cisneros followed closely in 10:47 and Dan Kottkamp in 10:52! Those two are capable of racing close to the other three! If they do look out! Others who impressed were top 7 guys John Jochum (11:21) and Ben Garcia who ran an 11:42 in his first year of Cross Country. Nolan McCue and the ever improving Adam Miller ran 11:49 and 11:51 respectively.

The Lady Chargers had an impressive performance from super sophomore Jacquelyn Nagel in 13:0.2  Natalie Perry went out at a projected sub 12:30 pace but suffered a minor knee bruise and still finished in 13:56, followed closely by fab freshman Jessica Nagel, Alison Alosio, Melissa Lindsay, and Alyssa Shaff. A few key personnel on the Girls Varsity were missing and need to get here! On the lower level top performances were turned in by Alex Duncan, German Arroyo, and Max Abens. For the ladies Katie Petry, Bailey Shemanski, Amanda Contreras, and Megan Sickle looked strong!

8/13/08

With the 2008 cross country season officially started, traditional Cross Country power ACC has welcomed in 51 athletes into the fold!  Both sides of the program could have very promising season's as they enter their second year in IHSA Class 2A competition!

ACC Men's team returns 6 athletes with top 7 experience led by Top senior Max Gilbert, Gilbert along with super Soph Jimmy Spencer could both eclipse the sub 15:45 marks this season!" according to Charger Head Coach Troy Kerber.  "Anyone who does their homework will know about Gilbert and Spencer, however we have a contingent of athletes who have worked hard and improved tremendously!" Juniors Dan Kottkamp and John Cisneros will look to run much closer to the projected top 2, along with Sr Garrett McCarthy who has had an excellent summer, and has looked strong in early season work-outs along with returnee Junior John Jochum!  "We envision having a front pack of 2 or 3 and then another pack of 4 following closely." The team goal is to have at least 7 under 16:35 for the Oakhurst course this year!" James Sobucki is the only key Charger loss moving on to the college level!

Top newcomers will be Juniors Ben Garcia, Dan Schlietwiler, Alan Maddock, and top underclassmen Sophomores Nolan McCue, Adam Miller, German Arroyo, Max Abens and Freshmen Alex Duncan, and Max Sepulveda.  The question to be answered soon will be where ACC gets routed in 2A?  Either the loaded Belvidere or Chicago Sectionals? At Belvidere ACC could be 1 of 7 teams in the mix for 5 spots and a trip to State in Peoria! Top Teams in the state will be there in Belvidere North, Dixon, Yorkville, Kaneland, Richmond-Burton, and Crystal Lake Central. " If we go to Chicago it will be ACC, SCC rival Wheaton-St.Francis, Wheaton Academy, Lemont, and Glenbard South!  "Either way the ultimate challenge for us is to sometimes get out of our own way!" Meaning stay healthy, eligible, and focused and we will be tremendously improved from 2007!"  It will come down to how bad they all want it!" They have the talent to get things done if they choose!"

The Lady Chargers will unveil another strong team with a slightly different look this year!" ACC had what most considered the strongest team in the history of the Girls program in 2007!  A strong 6th place finish at Belvidere would have translated into a 3rd place finish at 1A state in 2007!" Yes, we graduated college bound runners school record holders Valerie Cintron and Jamie Nagel, who Kerber refers to both as stellar runners for us!"  However, this years ACC team will boast the return of 7 girls with top 7 experience led by Jr Natalie Perry a converted sprinter who has had an excellent summer training. ''She could be a household name by the end of the year!" She is leading an awesome pack that includes top returning runner Sophomore Jacquelyn Nagel, Alexis Anthony, Senior Alyssa Shaff, top Freshman stand-out Jessica Nagel, who Kerber feels is an excellent talent!, and Sophomore Allison Alosio , Senior Meghan Kelly, Junior Melissa Lindsay, Sophomore Nicole Bohr, Junior Bianca Guzaldo, Sophomore Megan Sickle and Freshmen Amanda Contreras and Bailey Shemanski for the projected top 13! We feel that this team could be the deepest group we have ever had and any of the girls mentioned could do some serious racing for us as well as others!"  If we go to Belvidere, look for ACC, Crystal Lake Central, Sycamore, Geneseo, and Rock Island Alleman to do battle! At Chicago, I will say this now it will be a 3 team race between us, Wheaton St. Francis, and Wheaton Academy! We may start a little slow, but if all goes well look out in October!

2008 IHSA CLASS AA STATE TRACK MEET

5/27/2008 -

Making school history as the first male track athlete to represent Aurora Central Catholic at the state meet in AA, Steve Bohr competed in the high jump this past Friday. Only Valerie Cintron (cross country) and Bohr have qualified for state since the implement of the multiplier and the increase in student population bumped ACC to the next level of the IHSA competition. Bohr cleared 6'2" on Friday, but was unable to replicate his performance of 6'4"; a jump he made at Sectionals the week before. Thought he did not advance to day 2, his efforts should be commended for making it to state in what was arguably one of the toughest sectionals in Illinois.

SECTIONAL

5/27/2008 -

In what was arguably, the toughest Sectional in the State, Aurora Central Catholic was able to send senior Steve Bohr to the State Meet in the high jump. Bohr cleared 6'4" making him the first track athlete to qualify for state in AA from ACC and only the second qualifier in AA in school history.

Though the competition was fierce, ACC stepped up to the plate and had solid performances across the board. Though no one else qualified, the team was able to set a few PR's and learned what AA competition was all about. They learned how far they need to go if they want to qualify for state next year. With a fairly young team, this knowledge will prove useful in the years to come as the team transitions to AA competition.

ILLINOIS PREP TOP TIMES INVITATIONAL

3/30/2008-

The 2008 AA edition of the Indoor Classic took place on Saturday, March 29th. The day was filled with excitement as many records were broken and fast times were run. Ashley Verplank of Bloomington ran an impressive 4:55 in the 1600, while Nick Holmes of Limestone ran a stunning 4:13 on the boys' side. Mykhail Chambers of Urbana cleared 6'10" in the high jump. Local competitor Shakiea Pinnick (Waubonsie Valley) won two events and took third in another. ACC competed in AA for the first time in school history and did not disappoint as some great performances were turned in.

Anthony Kelley (high jump) was the lone individual qualifier for the meet. Despite clearing 6'3" earlier in the season, he was unable to clear the opening height of 6'2". In no way does this take away from the accomplishment of qualifying for the meet.

The boys' Distance Medley Relay team toed the line with 15 other schools and was right in the mix after junior Max Gilbert's opening 1200 meter leg. Joined by junior Garrett McCarthy, senior Steve Bohr, and freshman Jimmy Spencer, the boys finished in 11:38, only 11 seconds behind last year's finish and a school record.

The girl's DMR team of Valerie Cintron, Natalie Perry, Alexis Anthony, and Jamie Nagel ran an impressive race as well. The girls were leading the state for the first three legs. It was not until All-Stater Lizzy Hynes of St. Charles East received the baton that the girls began to get passed. The team ran an excellent race, well-deserving of the fifth place finish and their time of 13:09. They blasted away the previous school record set in 2006 by 36 seconds!

Hopefully these solid performances will lead to an impressive finish to the season in late May.
