How did it start ?

Albella was founded in 1961 by two British missionaries, Tom and Barbara Pratten, who started out in Pedong on the Tibetan border in the early 1950s, giving medical assistance to Tibetans fleeing after the Chinese takeover.

Tom died in Kalimpong in 1997 and Barbara in 1999, but the staff were all local people since  long before then.
