Colin Todhunter

Writer, Author and Journalist

Introduction

I am originally from Liverpool, England. Somewhere along the line, after having tried my hand at any number of things and due to various twists of fate, I ended up doing what I had aspired to do for a long time: write. I have written for newspapers, magazines and journals, always in a freelance capacity, and have had two books published. I'm also a contributing author of another. I have a Bachelors degree in Sociology from Liverpool University and a Masters from Liverpool John Moores University.

What I write on

I have written numerous commentaries (frequently biting and ironic, occasionally somewhat more sober), ranging from critiques of consumerism, modern culture, politics and other topical issues to profiles of various influential figures, such as Ivan Illich, Herbert Marcuse, Jimmy Page and Hedy Lamarr. As a seasoned globetrotter, I have also done a lot of travel writing and have written on many social issues as well, including disability, community development and healthcare. In addition, through my writing, I have purposively promoted various causes: for example, the UN-backed 'Campaign to End Fistula' and 'The Miriam Hyman Memorial Trust' and its work on children's eye care in India.

Publications written for

I have spent a total of six years on the Indian subcontinent and have written extensively for the Sunday editions of two leading Indian newspapers, the Bangalore-based Deccan Herald (2005 to present) and The New Sunday Express (New Indian Express, 2004 to 2007). My output has been fairly intensive for these newspapers, with around 80 of my pieces having appeared in the Sunday supplements on the arts, articulations, issues, travel and front-cover pages. I have also written for The Indian Express and a range of magazines, including Eve's Touch, GoNomad, Newtopia, Smart Thai and Fitness First, and for the academic publications Disability and Society, Social Research Update and the Qualitative European Drug Research Journal.

Books

My two books are set in India. Chester the Superior Dog goes to India was published in July 2008 and is the follow up to Chasing Rainbows in Chennai, which was released to widespread media acclaim and, in June 2003, reached No.3 in the bestseller list of India's largest bookstore at the time, Landmark. I am also a contributing author of The A-Z of Social Research (Sage, 2003), which has become a standard text in universities.
