ASEXUAL PROPAGATION (GRAFTING)

IV. TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS NEEDED
- Budding Knife
- Budding Tape
- Sphagnum Moss
- Prunner
- Scion and the stock for grafting and budding (to be provided: host region)
- San Francisco plants (to be provided by the host region)
V. SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
- Time allotment for this contest is 1 hour and 30 minutes, which means 30 minutes for each of the Asexual Propagation (budding, grafting and marcotting).
- Each contestant shall bring his/her own tools and materials. Only rootstocks, scions, sphagnum moss, transparent plastic wrappers and straw shall be prepared by the host region.
VI. CRITERIA FOR JUDGING - GRAFTING
A. Workmanship 70%
1. Both scion and stock are of the same sizeand maturity 10%
- Correctly choose a matured scion (dark green in color with alive buds) (10%)
- Incorrectly chosen matured scion/infected with molds and aphids (5%)
2. Scion and stock are neatly cut to shape correctly (clip for stock & wedge for scion) 20%
- Perfectly done and precision cut on the scion in making the wedge cut (20%)
- One slice of the scion in making the wedge cut (15%)
- Made two or more slice of scion (10%)
3. Scion is inserted to the stock and securely tied by the grafting tape 20%
- Not detached or removed from the stocks while the contestant lift or pull up the scions (20%)
- The removal of stock from the scion shows that it is insecurely tied by grafting (0%)
4. Grafting tape is applied correctly starting from below the point of contact upward 10%
- Correctly done and neatly wrapped the contact point (10%)
- Not neatly done and there is space in wrapping the scion (8%)
- Poorly done, unwrapped contact point (3%)
5. Standard procedures in grafting are properly applied 10%
- Standard procedure correctly applied (refer to no.3 to 5) (10%)
- Standard procedure are not correctly applied (5%)
B. Proper Use of Tools, Equipment and Materials 10%
- Grafting was performed/done with the use of standard tools and materials 5%
- Grafting knife used is sharp enough to produce a clean cut 5%
C. Speed and Accuracy 10%
- Performed with accuracy on or before time (10%)
- Performed with accuracy 5minutes after the time (8%)
- Performed with accuracy 8 minutes after the time (5%)
- Performed with accuracy 10 minutes after the time (3%)
D. Safety Measures 10%
- The handling of grafting knife and handling of scion is correctly done (10%)
