DAY ONE AND TWO: THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
For a low-stress con, I didn't get much sleep the night before leaving as I had unwisely left all my packing and touchups until Wednesday evening. As a result I was somewhat half-conscious Thursday, and in my rush to the bus station I forgot major parts of my costume and needed to turn around and head back home to retrieve them. That forced me to miss my bus, so I had to take the next one to Portland. Suffice to say, the weekend got off to a really shaky start. Fortunately, however, things only went up from there. Crazy Flower, my roomie for the weekend, picked me up at the Portland bus station around 8 PM and we headed to the hotel. Although the con was at the Sheraton, their rooms had sold out before we'd decided to attend PortCon, so we stayed at the Days Inn down the street. After unpacking, we ventured over to the Sheraton to see if we could find anyone we knew. When that turned out to be a bust, we stopped at Chile's restaurant to indulge in some delectable late-night desserts before returning to our room and getting some much-needed shuteye.
Friday morning, Crazy Flower and I got up around 9:30 AM so we could take advantage of the Days Inn's free breakfast. I grabbed some granola before heading back to
the hotel room to change into Super Sailor Chibi Moon. I was really excited to wear Chibi Moon again; after my disastrous experience with Chibi's wig at Anime Boston, I had redone the entire thing, and it finally looked how I had hoped it would the first time. Also, since I was traveling pretty lightly costume-wise for this con, I used the extra baggage space as an opportunity to do something I've always wanted to do: bring a near-life-sized Pegasus to the con! I've had an enormous stuffed unicorn lying in my closet since I was a kid; it was a hand-me-down from a cousin, and for whatever reason, I couldn't bring myself to toss it out. When I made my Chibiusa costume, however, I thought it would be awesome to dress up the unicorn as Pegasus and bring him with me. Meanwhile, Crazy Flower got into her Ice Queen costume, and we headed out. Since it was a bit rainy outside and we were lugging Pegasus around, we decided to be lazy and drive to the con. As soon as we opened our doors and began dragging Pegasus to the door, we were already stopped for pics - LOL.
The morning was a bit slow given the size of the con; after signing up for the Masquerade we went and chatted with Sketch and PatD for a bit, then wandered around. I got some pics with an excellent Sera Myu Sailor Mercury and Wicked Lady, Chibi Moon's alter ego. The girl cosplayign Wicked Lady also had a booth in artist's alley where she made really cute pins. Coincidentally, later that morning a really nice con-goer ran up to me and gave me one of those pins as an impromtu gift,
and the pin had Wicked Lady on it. I was so surprised, random people don't usually buy me presents! Thanks again - the pin is adorable, and it's still on my purse! ^^ I then grabbed a seat in the crowded J-Idol Contest, which was basically a karaoke competition mixed with a bit of cosplay and trivia. There were some pretty decent singers, although it was rather long so I didn't stay for the entire event. At 1 PM, I made a point of attending the AMV contest, which was packed into a small video room. I didn't enter an AMV this time, but regardless the competition was rather mediocre, with only a handful of entries. Unlike Bakuretsu Con which had several good entries, Helix's vid was the only really decent one there. After the contest, however, there was a showing of a BRILLIANT Final Fantasy spoof filmed at Babson College. Not only was it really well shot and edited, but the script was entertaining enough to keep my attention for the duration of its runtime - a whopping 40-minutes!
Seeing this made going to the AMVs more than worth it. Definitely the best RPG fan film EVER. You can watch the film on YouTube here.
Later that afternoon, I stopped by the photo suite to have a few pics taken with Pegasus before finding Crazy Flower and heading out to the Sheraton lobby. There we met up with Michela (as Valor Sora), Gingeranne (Roxas), Linker83 (Link), Jeffrey, and Ladyhawke, and all of us hung out for quite a while. I had met Michela and Ladyhawke before briefly, but had only seen the others in passing before at cons. It was awesome to get to know all of them better, and the six of us had a blast chatting and getting pics taken. Soon it was 6 PM and we were all getting hungry. Unfortunately, Ladyhawke had to stick around the hotel as her luggage was misplaced by the airline (luckily it turned up later), but the rest of us put our props into our respective vehicles and walked down the street to Chile's
for a rousing dinner in costume. Of course, our promenade to the restaurant, being along one of Portland's main roads, caused quite a stir, including a guy who almost fell out of a car door gawking at us! Once we arrived we sat down to a lovely dinner, though our lively conversation and colorful costumes prompted many strange looks. . . although they were probably envious of our obvious enjoyment. Before leaving, I managed to get my odangos caught in the lamp hanging over our table, as I was not quite aware of my current clearance height. The result was a loud, "SHIT!" emanating from my lips as I tumbled to the floor, much to everyone's amusement. As we left laughing, we noticed that the lamp was no longer functioning. Whoops.
On our way back to the con, we ran a bit amok on the streets of Portland; Michela, Gingeranne, and Linker83 directed traffic using a street sign they found lying around, and we spent some time holding hands and skipping across the street at the main intersection, much to the delight on oncoming traffic. Jeffrey even got it all on film. Back at the Sheraton, we hung out for a while in the small garden outside the main entrance trying to decide what to do. While we were relaxing, we noticed a couple
of guys up in one of the hotel rooms banging on the window and trying to get our attention. When we looked up, we saw them waving signs which said "Orgy, Room 501." Going along with the joke, we decided the small-print signs were difficult to read, and demanded clarification. Gingeranne pointed towards the room, mimed buttsecks with Linker83, then pointed back at the room as if to ask, "Is that what you mean?" Meanwhile, we almost died with laughter. In response, the inhabitants of the room started dancing around and pretended to strip. Not to be outdone, we decided to give them the scene they were attempting to create. We all faked being horrified, and pointed at the room, yelling things like, "OMG, what are they DOING?! That's disgusting!" Several people outside joined in, and soon we had a crowd gathered. We were so convincing, several people ran out in swimsuits
and towels, having jumped out of the pool to see what was going on. We embarrassed the room enough that they shut the shades and gave up. HAHA - we win!
After that incident, it was 9 PM - time for Anime Unscripted, run by Patrick D. We headed over to the ballroom to watch Sketch, Ladyhawke, and voice actor Mike McFarland perform. After the show, we chatted with PatD for a bit, before deciding, as Ladyhawke said as part of the show, "And now we drink!" Crazy Flower and I drove back to the Days Inn to change into normal, comfortable clothing before meeting the rest of the gang at the Sheraton bar. It felt really great to get Chibi's wig off; its a bit heavy and was starting to give me a headache. Feeling refreshed, we walked back to the con and took over a set of couches in the corner. Armed with some yummy margaritas and Long Island iced teas, myself, Crazy Flower, Michela, Gingeranne, Linker83, Jeffrey, and Ladyhawke spent the rest of the evening chatting and getting pleasantly trashed. When they kicked us out at 1 AM, we hung out in the hotel lobby before stumbling back to the Days Inn to turn in for the night.
