Game Creation

In the  late 80's early 90's I was addicted, not to alcohol or drugs but something far more sinister, to adventure games.  Not just any old game would do either, it had to be one of the best, it had to be one of Sierra's.  And so now that it has become possible I am creating my own Sierra styled adventure games.

Empty  SAC Productions uses different tools which, through the hard work and generosity of others, have been made available to the general public.  In acknowledgement of all that these people have provided, please take a moment to look over the Game Studio softwares that we use.

There are currently two main tools which are used for the actual game production: SciStudio and AgsStudio.  Both pieces of software are used to create Sierra style adventure games, similar to the Space Quest, King's Quest, or Leisure Suit Larry series.

SciStudio

SciStudio,  developed by Brian Provinciano, is a stand alone game creation studio which produces Sierra's 1980's style EGA games.  This software package includes a built in script editor and compiler, besides having editors for creating custom backgrounds, objects, cursors, and fonts.

The EGA games that can be created are limited to 16 colors and incorporate a text command parser: such that typing "look at window" would produce a description of the window, or "get box" would add the box to your inventory.  To learn more about this or any of the other software developed by Brian, check out his site.

AgsStudio

Adventure  Game Studio, developed by Chris Jones, is a game creation studio which transforms many common file types into game resources.  In order to create rooms, objects, characters, or cursors any program that will produce *.bmp, *.pcx, *.png, *.tga format image files can be used.  Incorporating a rather pain-free drop down menu allows a user to script almost all interactions the game will need to make with ease.

The games which can be produced by this software have no color limitations ranging anywhere from 256 to 13,000,000 colors and incorporates a point and click interface.  To learn about AGS or a number of the games created with it, visit the official AGS site
