The Website of "Find A Computer A Home"
Introduction
We are a small, unregistered charity in Victoria BC, Canada. We provide recycled and refurbished computers to citizens of Victoria who "normally cannot afford to purchase their own computer". Our goal is to assist disadvantaged citizens, help them to become active, contributing members of society, to improve their lifestyles and to connect them with their community via the Internet. Priority for computers goes to those training to enter the workforce or to upgrade their employment, students, the disabled, shut-ins and low income, employed persons.
An environmental offshoot of this goal is that we extend the useful working lives of perfectly adequate computer equipment.
NEWS FLASH!: We are keen to find a volunteer who can assist us as a "call centre" to gather client data for those requesting computers. You would require access to a landline telephone with an answering machine and the Internet. We wil provide software training and a desktop computer if required. Contact us if you meet these requirements.
Donations of Computers and Computer Parts Gratefully Accepted with Free Pick-Up
We provide Free pick up within the Greater Victoria area. That includes Central Saanich and Metchosin but we may be tempted further afield by some very good equipment. If you would like to contribute we need:
- Pentium 4 (1000MHz) or faster working computers, especially working laptops
- Hard Drives larger than 10GB
- wireless cards or wireless USB dongles
- 256MB or larger memory modules
- DVD writer drives
- LCD panel displays
For free pickup contact:
- Jim telephone (250)474-3446
If you have very old computer equipment, including monitors, printers, etc., which do not meet the above guidelines you can recycle that equipment now for free in British Columbia. Please visit this website to locate a recycling depot near you. We are unable to accept any of the following items: fax machines, telephones, televisions, audio equipment, scanners, printers (unless they are fully working and have new cartridges) and speakers
Without donations of computer equipment many Victorians would not be able to obtain a free computer through FACAH. We wish to sincerely thank all of our donors for their generosity in helping us and the citizens of Victoria. Some of our major donors are: The University of Victoria, Royal Roads University, Vancouver Island University, The Red Cross, The Land Conservancy of BC, Pembroke Holmes, Hewlett Packard, The Empress Hotel, Vancouver Island Health Authority, Hydroxyl Systems Inc, WorkLink, Reger Consulting, The Songhees Nation, Saanich Native Community, Pacific Trekking, amongst many others. Many individuals have also donated equipment -- thank you!
