| THE HISTORY OF OUR FELINE FRIENDS... Picture below is of an 'Egyptian Mau'... |
“Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.” – Origin Unknown.
We have lived alongside cats for at least 4,000 years. It is believed that the domestic cat evolved in Egypt and is probably a descendant of the African Wild Cat (felis libyca). Cats where originally domesticated to aid the Ancient Egyptians in controlling vermin and this strong hunting instinct still remains with our domestic cats today. You yourself have probably witnessed your own cat bringing home a bird, mouse, frog or other unfortunate creature. The Egyptians thought so highly of cats that they even worshipped them as if they were gods. Unfortunately for the cat, they were also slaughtered for sacrificial purposes, to appease Basht (a cat-like goddess) and then entombed in special temples. These sacrificial ceremonies apparently took place in the Spring, because it is believed that Basht, who had the head of a cat, but the body of a woman was linked to fertility rites.
Over the years cats have historically been through good and bad periods. During the plague, cats were welcomed as a mean of controlling the huge numbers of vermin carrying the deadly disease, but equally they have also been persecuted as they have been linked with symbols of evil and the occult and pagan worship and were tortured and killed due to their association with witches in Europe during the Middle Ages.
Superstition surrounding cats has survived until recent years, and even now in Cornwall (UK), ancient custom suggests that a cross should be drawn on the toe of a shoe, if you encounter an unknown black cat.
During the end of the 19th Century, the keeping of companion animals changed. Selective breeding was encouraged, which saw the emergence of specific feline breed’s, which had recognizable features. Competitive exhibitions attracted more interest and so cats were then judged to prescribed standards for their particular breeds. In the United Kingdom the first National Cat Show took place in 1871 and a similar event was organized in the United States 24 years after this. The cat has grown to such heights, that it is now our number one most popular domestic pet.
