Guy's Mini Biography
Guy’s original goal was to get into the Top 40 and anything he achieves after that while travelling on his Idol journey is an “absolute bonus”. Guy considers it a real honour to be considered in the same league as the other contestants.
This Adelaide lad has already developed a taste for the Sydney groove and spends time hanging out at the celebrity hot spots around King’s Cross (which is where the Idol recording studio is based). Some of the celebrity-ness is also rubbing off on him as girls are beginning to recognise him in the street. While he enjoys chatting to his fans, Guy finds it pretty scary when complete strangers see him and scream!
When Guy starts getting nervous before he performs, he shuts his eyes and goes to his personal “Grooveland”. This is his personal way of focussing and stops him from stressing. He says he’s not confident at all and even though he gets nervous fairly easily, he covers up it like an expert. He used to get SO nervous that his bottom lip used to quiver and vibrate to the point where it wouldn’t stop shaking and he couldn’t sing!
He loves to write songs and has books and books completely full of songs he has penned. “I make up tunes in the shower, sitting in the car and always carry around a Dictaphone (it’s built into his mobile phone) so if a tune comes into my head I can record it into the voicemail on my phone – that way I don’t forget it.”
Guy’s impressive afro has been around for about eighteen months. He used to have a clean-cut do, and then completely shaved it off two years ago. “One day I just decided I wouldn’t cut it and my hair just grew bigger and bigger!”
Guy juggles two jobs - one of which is teaching vocals at high schools and the other is as a recording engineer. Singing is quite a far reach from what Guy originally studied at University, which was medical radiation. He managed to stick it out for two years but then it got a little too depressing seeing people getting sick all the time, so he had to leave Uni and decided to pursue his passion for singing.
He was born in Malaysia and moved to Melbourne with his family when he was six years old when his father, who is a geologist, was sent there for work. At the age of ten, everybody upped sticks and moved to Adelaide, which is where he now lives.
As a kid, he played the violin basically to satisfy his parents’ urge for their son to conquer a musical instrument but he only ever learned one song and it was that one song that he used to play at every family gathering and party for about three years! Eventually he gave up the violin and now dabbles on piano, drums and guitar.
Guy is a huge cricket head and plays as often as he can in summer. He’s also just taken up golf and loves to “thrash that little white ball up and down the fairway, but sadly, it never goes near the green.” When he’s not teaching his students, or songwriting, or rehearsing his own music, Guy jumps on his Yamaha 250 and tears through the Adelaide Hills for hours and hours. It’s the “ultimate relaxation!”.
