Crime & Punishment

Obviously, this is the section where we deal with the phrase "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime." But honestly, whose ever read the school rules before? I mean, we are Hogwarts students...

Detention

By breaking any of the school rules above, depending on how severely it is broken, you will receive any of the following punishments: detention, deducation of house points, seeing your head of house or expulsion. Detention is the most common of the four.

Teachers...

All teachers have different ways of getting students to learn from their mistakes. Professor Snape believes that physical work is the best way to go. Professor McGonagall sees fit for students to be fearful of breaking the rules. Professor Umbridge thought that pain would do the trick. Filtch sees a different approach--hanging students from the ceiling by their ears. However, lucky for you, he is not a teacher. Professor Moody thought that by transfiguring students into animals and making them bounce around the entrance hall would help them to stop breaking rules, but he himself was breaking a rule by doing this.

McGonagall -- A trip into the Forbidden Forest or lines.
Snape -- Cleaning, dissecting creatures or re-writing Filtch's punishment cards.
Umbridge -- Lines with her special pen (which writes what you write on the paper onto your hand and makes it bleed--creates a scar).
Lockhart -- Helping write his fan mail.
Other teachers detention sentences are unknown.

Other Punishments

      Deduction of House Points.
Any teacher has the ability to deduct points from any house he or she chooses, within reason. For minor offenses the usual 5 - 10 points may be deducted. For major offenses, the product may be up to 50 points. This is a horrible loss when the House Cup is decided.
      See Head of House.
This is much like a referral to see the principal or dean of a school. You are to state your name, what you've done wrong and an explanation. It is up to your Head of House to decide your punishment.
      Expulsion.
There are many ways to be expelled, but only major offenses can get you into so much trouble. If it threatens the lives of other students in the castle, you will be expelled, and your wand snapped in half.
