"It takes care, it takes patience and fear and despair to change."The baker is a man who has lived a very normal life. When it comes time to lift a curse on his house preventing him from concieving a child, he goes about his duty as the man of the house, but he is clearly out of place. He is stubborn in his ways, he makes every attempt to protect his wife from danger, but in time the woods get hold of him and his wife begins to notice that he thrives under pressure. Or maybe he doesn't, but if she thinks he does, little else will matter to him. The baker, despite a couple of slips, is the moral center of the story. He struggles to go to any lengths at anyone else's expense. He shows us that seeking help and co-operation to reach your goals does not lessen the achievement if there are mutual benefits involved. Musically:While the baker is the character that joins all others together and appears in more scenes than any other, he doesn't get nearly as many songs. His first real song, It Takes Two, is a duet with his wife. He doesn't reappear musically after that until Your Fault, where he makes as large a contribution as any. His real highlights are at the end of the show. He takes half the weight on both No More and No One is Alone. |
