WHO IS JOHNNY DEPP? Johnny Depp is arguably one of the most talented actors of our time. Not only has he wowed audiences and critics alike with his wide range of roles and stupendous abilities, he’s also made headlines with his eccentric antics and buzzed-about romances. Over the years, he’s been nominated for Academy Awards and Golden Globes, become a father to two beautiful children, and earned a huge fan-base of dedicated admirers. BEFORE FAME… Johnny Depp (born John Christopher Depp II), was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1963. He moved around often as a child, but was raised mainly in Florida. His house consisted of himself, his parents John Christopher Depp Sr. and Betty Sue, and his siblings Danny, Debbie, and Christie. At the age of 13, Johnny’s mother bought him a guitar. Music became therapeutic for Johnny during his parents’ divorce when he was 15. A year later, he dropped out of high school to concentrate on his band, The Flame. He also began to experiment with drugs. The band relocated to Los Angeles to try and get a record deal; they changed their name to The Kids. It was then that Johnny met and married Lori Anne Allison, who was the sister of the band’s drummer. The two were wed on December 20, 1983. Because The Kids broke up shortly after, Lori and Johnny struggled to make ends meet. Lori worked as a make-up artist and Johnny took up several odd jobs, including telemarketing. It was around this time that Lori introduced Johnny to actor Nicolas Cage – and this is when Johnny’s career finally started to take off. A STAR IS BORN Cage advised Johnny to switch from guitar to acting so he could support himself and his wife. Johnny agreed, although things took off slowly. He scored his first acting role in the 1984 horror flick A Nightmare On Elm Street. Although he was finding work, his success couldn’t save his marriage. Johnny and Allison sadly divorced in 1985. Just two years later, Johnny hit the big time as bad-boy Officer Tom Hanson on the hit TV drama 21 Jump Street. Johnny earned instant fame and was looked upon as a heartthrob among teen girls. However, this fame was uncomfortable to Johnny. He often asked to be removed from the show – in 1990, his wish came true. MOVING ON Expected to take the typical route as a teen star, Johnny shocked everyone by taking the quirky role as a recluse with scissors as hands in the Tim Burton film Edward Scissorhands. The film was nominated for an Oscar and Johnny was able to work with his real-life love, Winona Ryder. The two were engaged for 3 years but broke it off. Edward was followed by equally unusual roles in films such as Benny and Joon, Ed Wood and Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. Johnny was never stereotyped because he never stuck to one genre. Off-screen, his behavior was just as interesting. He dated model Kate Moss and dabbled in drugs again. He was also arrested several times, once for an altercation in a hotel lobby, another time for trashing a New York hotel room, and once again for getting into a fight with the paparazzi. TURNING A NEW LEAF In 1998, everything changed. That was when Johnny met the love of his life, French singer/actress Vanessa Paradis. While in France filming From Hell, Johnny spotted Vanessa in a darkened room. Though they could barely distinguish each other’s faces, there was an instant connection. It was love at first sight – even though they couldn’t see each other. A year later, Vanessa gave birth to their first child, Lily-Rose Melody Depp; in 2002, they had another child, John Christopher Depp III, aka Jack. Johnny decided it was time to accept more family-oriented films that his kids could see. So he signed on for the role of a lifetime: the role of Jack Sparrow. His Oscar-nominated take as Captain Sparrow was an immediate hit. This was a hard act to follow, but Johnny managed to continue impress the audience with other family films, such as Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. He hasn’t ended his controversial streak, though – he starred in the R-rated epic The Libertine as well. WHERE IS HE NOW? Johnny, Vanessa, and their children currently divide their time at their homes in Los Angeles and the South of France. Johnny also owns a small Caribbean island. He is busy promoting this summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, filming the third film in the installment, and in the future will act in and produce The Rum Diary and Shantaram.
