Innocence is an intriguing mare, and like the double-faced Janus, she can be both angelic at times, befitting her name, and a spoiled hellion at other times. This finely-expressed complexity that seems inherent to her nature only makes Innocence a more endearing mare—for who wants a boring horse who is always predictable?
When I first laid eyes on Innocence, the first thing that struck me was her ethereal beauty. She truly is a lovely mare, and seems to know it, for she preens when anyone’s eyes are upon her (making her riveting to the judges in the showing forum, of course). Her golden coloring, her pristine white mane and tail, and her queenly, regal bearing make this mare an arresting sight, and her statuesque size (a gorgeous 17.0hh) only helps to glue eyes upon her. It seems that it’s most in these moments that Innocence likes to show off, and thus she can be difficult to make focus on a specific task. However, when she settles down, she settles down beautifully and fully, and is suddenly an angel, ready to do her rider’s bidding and accomplish whatever needs to be done.
This combination of personalities could be challenging to understand and control to a beginning or intermediate rider, but to an advanced rider, they are an asset in the ring, for Innocence is both haughty and elegant, commanding everyone’s attention while still remaining pliant to her rider’s wishes, making her a great athlete and competitor. Her sire, Michellino, is one of the top Danish Warmblood sires right now, and he is one of the most beautifully conformed stallions I have ever witnessed. Innocence got her palomino coloring from her dam, Alfie, but received her tremendous athletic ability from both her sire and dam. She jumps with ease and grace, and works hard under saddle for her trainer and rider. She is not a mare easily given to whims, and she is one of those horses that really loves to be ridden.
When Innocence is initially brought out to be worked with, we sometimes have to do a bit of free lunging with her, for she has so much energy, but once she stretches her legs and gets her lungs working, Innocence is ready to be guided to success. This golden mare has a bright future ahead of her, full of golden opportunities, and the appositional threads of her personality which create her make-up—the hellion-like regality and the demurred angel—only make her a more interesting and talented mare, given to creative impulses and a true thirst for success.
