Black and white photography has been a passion of mine for a long time. That’s not to say I have done a great deal of it myself. In the past, I mainly shot slide film (good old Velvia) and never really got round to shooting much b/w film. I did run off a few rolls though. No! My main interest came from looking at the work of the greats, like Henri Cartier-Bresson, and the rest of the Magnum team. Don McMullen’s emotive images of the Vietnam war, and his dark images of the British landscape also fascinates me, especially for its light and texture - both being paramount of course to good black and white photography! There are many other good black and white photographers who continue to inspire me to get up and do it.
What is the point of this blog? Hopefully it will interest like-minded people, and perhaps we can help one another to achieve the best digital mono we can get from our cameras and editing programmes. Please leave your recipes here or email them to me for inclusion. In future blogs I will explain some of the methods I use to achieve good black and white contrast. But most of my skills have come from web browsing, and from talking to other guys and girls over at the Digital Camera Magazine forum, and plenty of experimentation in Photoshop.
