The Alaska Marine Highway System (Prince Rupert, British Columbia to Skagway, Alaska)

Our journey to Alaska included a ferry boat trip up the "Inside Passage" otherwise known as Southeastern Alaska.  We made four separate trips to the towns of Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau (the state capital), and Skagway. All but Skagway can only be reached by boat or plane.  In each town, we drove off the ferry and camped for two nights before getting back on the ferry and sailing to the next town.  On two of the trips, we slept on the ferry.  We did not have a cabin, but instead slept in our sleeping bags on deck.  It was boat camping. Altogether we spent approximately 50 hours on 3 different boats (Kennicott, Le Conte and Taku).  All Alaska ferries are named after glaciers in Alaska.  The Inside Passage has magnificent scenery (some photos included without captions) and the boats pass very close in some of the channels.  We saw seals and porpoises and lots of different water fowl.  This was as close to an Alaskan cruise as we'll get, but in this case, we took our minivan along with us. The ferry trip was very relaxing and a good break from driving.  It was also a great opportunity to meet many interesting people from as far away as Australia and as close as Timonium and Philadelphia..  

Onze tocht naar Alaska omvatte enkele trips aan boord van een ferry, gezien de "Inside Passage", het Zuidoostelijke staartje van Alaska, enkel bereikbaar is via het water of de lucht. We legden aan in 4 stadjes, nl. Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau (de hoofdstad van Alaska) en Skagway en hadden telkens onze auto mee, zodat we gemakkelijk de relatief kleine plaatsjes konden exploreren. De ene boottocht was al langer dan de andere, maar alles samen spendeerden we zowat 50 uur aan boord met 2 overnachtingen. Een hut was niet nodig; we kampeerden gewoon op het zonnedek. We waren op 3 verschillende boten : de Kennicott, Le Conte en Taku, telkens genoemd naar een gletsjer in Alaska. Aan boord hadden we alle tijd om te genieten van de prachtige zichten die aan ons voorbijgleden. Soms baande de boot zich een weg door relatief smalle kanaaltjes. Onderweg werden we begroet door speelse dolfijnen en zeehonden, en massa's vogels. Deze tocht per ferry is de armemansversie van een cruise, maar geeft een unieke kans om interessante mensen te ontmoeten, zowel "locals" als toeristen van over de hele wereld.
