KATMAI NATIONAL PARK

At the halfway point of our volunteer assignment at the Eagle River Nature Center, we got a week off.  This allows for the transfer of shifts between the four resident volunteers.  From May 19th until July 10th, we worked Monday to Thursday, while the other two volunteers worked the Friday to Sunday shift. From July 11th to 17th, we had off and then returned to work on Friday, July 18th  to work the Friday to Sunday shift for the rest of the summer.

During our week off, we were very privileged to be able to go to Katmai National Park.  It is a very special place that can only be reached by boat or plane.  It is one of the premier places in the world for viewing brown bears, especially during the salmon run.  However, it was originally protected by the National Park Service, not because of the bears, but because of the geological formations and volcanic activity resulting from the June 6, 1912 eruption of Novarupta, the 3rd largest eruption on Earth based on the amount of ash spewed into the atmosphere.  A once lush green valley was transformed into what is now called the Valley of the 10,000 Smokes.  It is, on a much smaller scale of course, a cross between the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.  Up until the 1950’s, there were thousands of little steam vents throughout the valley giving rise to the name 10,000 smokes.  It was later that the bears began fishing for salmon in the Brooks River and the bear viewing became Katmai’s main attraction and the Valley of the 10,000 Smokes secondary.  During the 3+ days that we were there, we did a lot of bear viewing and also made the trip to the Valley of the 10,000 Smokes where we hiked into the valley.  Since it was nearly impossible to select only 30-40 photos covering our journey plus these two extraordinary things, we have given each its own link with pictures of its own.  So, please click on the appropriate link below to see the photos of either the Bears of Katmai or the Valley of the 10,000 Smokes.


Halverwege ons verblijf in Eagle River Nature Center kregen we een weekje (11 tot 17 juli) vrijaf. Op die manier was er een vlotte overgang van de weekploeg (maandag-donderdag) naar de weekendploeg (vrijdag-zondag) tussen de 4 vrijwilligers.

We trakteerden onszelf op een uitstap naar Katmai Nationaal Park, dat alleen per boot of vliegtuig kan bereikt worden. Het is een unieke plaats en wereldberoemd voor het observeren van grizzlyberen, voornamelijk tijdens de periode dat de zalm stroomopwaarts zwemt om kuit te gaan schieten. Oorspronkelijk nochtans was het park niet beschermd omwille van de beren, maar eerder omwille van de geologische formaties en vulkanische aktiviteit als gevolg van de Novarupta vulkaanuitbarsting op 6 juni 1912. Dit was de derdegrootste uitbarsting op aarde gebaseerd op de hoeveelheden uitgespuwde as in de atmosfeer. Wat eens een groene vallei was, is nu omgevormd in de "Valley of the 10000 smokes". Het is een beetje de kruising tussen de Grand Canyon en Yellowstone, maar op een veel kleinere schaal. Tot in de jaren 50 waren er in de vallei duizenden kleine openingen langs waar stoom ontsnapte. Het was pas later dat het park bekend werd voor zijn beren en dat de hoofdattraktie van Katmai observatie van beren die op zalm vissen is geworden. Gedurende de dikke 3 dagen dat we in Katmai verbleven, spendeerden we ettelijke uurtjes "beertjes kijken", maar deden we ook een uitstap naar en voettocht in de vallei. We vonden het enorm moeilijk slechts 30-40 foto's te selecteren voor deze twee bijzondere aspekten van de reis, dus hebben we elk onderdeel zijn eigen link gegeven:

The photos below show our journey to and from Katmai National Park, which was unique in and of itself.  We flew from Anchorage to King Salmon on a 30-passenger propeller plane and then connected to a float plane that took us the rest of the way and landed on Brooks Lake.  This was our first experience taking off and landing on water.  The pictures also show some of the extraordinary scenery we saw from both flights as well as some of the other features of Katmai National Park not covered in the two additional links.  We have seen and done a lot on this Alaskan adventure, but our trip to Katmai is without doubt, the highlight so far.

De onderstaande foto's geven een algemeen beeld van onze uitstap naar Katmai Nationaal Park, wat al uniek was op zichzelf. We vlogen van Anchorage naar King Salmon in een klein schroefvliegtuigje voor 30 passagiers. Verder ging het met een watervliegtuigje dat landde op Brooks meer. Het was onze eerste ervaring met opstijgen en landen op het water. De foto's tonen ook een stukje van het uitzonderlijk mooi landschap gedurende de 2 korte vluchten en enkele bijzonderheden van Katmai die niet ondergebracht zijn in de 2 links. We hebben al heel wat gezien en beleefd hier in Alaska, maar Katmai is zonder twijfel 1 van de hoogtepunten!
