The Way Home - Missouri

After a long drive through the state of Kansas, we spent nearly a week in Missouri.  Our first stops were in Independence and Kansas City. In Independence, we visited the Harry S. Truman national Historic Site and the Truman Presidential Library and Museum.  We learned so much about Harry Truman and the tough decisions he had to make as President.  We could not help but wonder what he would do if he were the President today.  Downtown Kansas City is much like any other large U.S. city with tall buildings, shops &restaurants, and some areas that could use restoration.  The train station has been restored and is very nice.  It is similar to Union Station in Washington, DC.  We drove across Missouri to Saint Louis.  The two highlights there were the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site which preserves the home (White Haven) and some of the farm that Grant owned and lived in much of his life, and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial which includes the Gateway Arch, the Old Courthouse where the Dred Scott case was heard, and a fantastic museum devoted to the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis & Clark's Expedition, and the westward expansion of the United States.  While visiting the Old Courthouse, we had the pleasure of meeting Fran Mainella, the Director or the National Park Service.  It seemed more than coincidental that we would have the opportunity to meet her and talk to her on a trip that took us to more than 30 NPS facilities. While in Missouri, we camped at two state parks, one just outside K.C. and the other on the outskirts of Saint Louis.
