Devil's Castle

Lew writes: "While touring in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania last June (2004), we were taken one day to visit Peles Castle, a graceful, extravagant example of royal excess that today is carefully maintained as a popular tourist destination.

As we donned felt booties and followed our guide up long stairways and along marble halls, my imagination got to work, visualizing the castle in a more sinister setting. (After all, this was Transylvania!)

My sleep that night was troubled with dreams of this fantastic structure, its towering spires and forbidding turrets looming above a dark forest aflame! The image stayed with me, and the next morning, I made quick notes, knowing that an important painting would inevitably result."
