Marcus Kane Interview
Thank for doing this interview Marcus. Tell everyone how the new CD "Eternal Darkness" is coming along
It's really just begun. Basic tracks have been laid to three of the songs and more will be laid this week.Things got delayed due to illness but we plan to be moving quickly now
The last CD "Prayers of the Damned" had a concept that strung all the songs together in a way.Is "Eternal Darkness" in any way a concept project?
Not in the strict sense of the word. The songs, for the most part, deal with the darker aspects of life in general. I was thinking in terms of that when I wrote the songs, but its not all one story. Call it a collection of short stories I guess.
Any Favorites you can tell us about?
Well, thats hard until they are completed. Sometimes a song will surprise you and turn ot far better than expected. Sometimes the reverse Is true as well.
I was reading the lyrics you sent me and the general impression I got was that these songs are much more about a persons personal darkness or personal demons than it is about the occult or evil in general.
It is. I think that at times a persons inner demons are what drives them to be the way they are. If someone is thought of as "Evil" based on their actions, its a good bet that they had those inner demons driving them. I think its much more interesting than just writing about conceptual evil
Theres more relationship type songs than there was on your other projects. Would that be fair to say?
There may be. Though Not traditional type relationship songs. Some peoples own personal darkness comes from unrequited love or loss, others from lust or desires left unfulfilled.Others come from their souls because they prefer to exist in that darkness. They take comfort in it and feel thats where they belong. I wrote the songs to explore the various ways people end up in that darkness
How about you personally? Do you live in that darkness?
To be honest I think everyone does to some extent. Even if its just a private darkness that never gets shown to the outside world.
The most interesting thing about your writing in my opinion, is that it holds a kind of romance to it dispite some very gloomy subject matter. Its a sort of dark romanticism I guess. Even in the more extreme songs theres a hint of emotional torment or passion.
Well Thank you, I Think there may be elements of that in most all my writing. I don't intentionally write that way but I feel that no matter what subject you may be writing on, from love to murder to religion, There is a passion behind it that drives it
I'm going to mention a few lyric in particular and maybe you can tell me a little bit about the songs and thier meanings. "Drown in my river of tears/one drop for every year/I've waited here all alone/ knowing inside you are gone"
From "My Babylon" Its open to interpatation I suppose. It could be someone grieving for a lost love one or as simple as a failed relationship. The key really is that there is an obvious obsession that keeps the person waiting and grieving year after year even after admitting knowing they are gone
A passion?
(laughs) Yes, maybe an unhealthy one, but certainly a passion
"I wear the mask so you can't see me/ its made from suffering and guilt/ it bears the scars you've put upon me/ I'm trapped inside the walls you built"
From "The Mask" Its simply a song that points out we all wear a mask to cover up our self doubts and weaknesses. We can act a certain way to those around us, but in general thats a mask we wear to protect ourselves from others scrutiny
Ok, one more " I will be lonely here without you/ some words are hard for me to say/ but when the darkness walks beside you/ let me take your pain away"
From "Take your pain away" its a pretty basic self explanitory song. People always seem to be able to say they hate something or someone but find it much harder to say they love someone. I think they consider it a weakness. Sometimes that love only manifests itself when the other person is going through a hard time or "Darkness" comes to call on them. Its a love song of sorts
Is it Hard for you to say you love someone?
(laughs) I suppose it is.
Well all the lyrics are just great and I can't wait to hear the songs
Thanks, I think its our best work to date
Speaking of writing, you are releasing a book soon. Can you tell us about that?
Well, Its called "The Black Diary" and its a collection of lyrics, poems and short texts that I've written over the last few years. Some lyrics are from various Cellar dweller projects and others are unreleased. Its for those who do enjoy my lyrics and want a better insight into them
Thats awesome. I think I will really enjoy reading it. Is this your first book of poems?
Yes, though its not all poems. I'm hoping its something our fans will all enjoy
Can I ask some personal questions or should I stick to the basics?
Ask whatever you want. If I think its too personal I just wont answer it or I'll lie (laughs)
What makes you angry?
Lots of things, Injustice, hypocracy prejudice..
What makes you most Happy?
Music, reading, Working out
Do you consider yourself anti religious?
Not anti religious just anti hypocracy and I do feel many, if not all, religions have thier fair share of hypocracy. If someone chooses to be religious though I think thats great as long as it helps them to be self fulfilled.
Are you a satanist?
Satanism IS a religion so my answer still holds
Since we couldn't get the entire band here to do the interview could you comment on the others a bit?
Sure, Erik Cardinale is the "musician" of the band so to speak. He worries more about the technique than I do. His work is very important to him and obviously to the band.. Tom B Stone is a unique Drummer in the sense that his beats really accent the tone of the lyrics in a way most drummers might miss. He is about setting the tone for the song and accenting the words and not about being flashy. Its the exact type of drumming we need and when a song calls for a bit of drum mayhem he can do that as well
Ok last few questions. What do you say to the death metal fans who say that your image is far from the style of music you play?
I say thats their opinion. I have nothing against death metal music. I like a lot of it I just choose not to play it. As far as the "image" goes No style owns a particular Image. If they are upset I use Occult symbolism I can only say that for me thats really not an image and I think it fits me far more than many who use it to sell product.
I agree. What would you say is the strong point of the band?
I guess you could tell me better than I could tell you, but I'd say Diversity. We have no one given ""sound" We range from metal to goth to blues and everything in between. I'd get bored playing the exact same thing over and over and I think our fans would grow tired of listening to it. I try very hard to make our cds unique and diverse in style
I totally agree and I think thats why you get fans who listen to every style of music appreciating your songs. Its something I noticed right away and it does set you apart from others
Thanks, Its something I take pride in
Marcus, thanks for putting up with me Im not an interviewer and I guess it showed but you were very kind.
You did fine, and before I go I know we agreed not to mention this but I did want to end this by saying the band really appreciates the job you did on the fan site. Its far better then we expected and we are grateful to you for taking such interest in it
I'm happy to have had the chance to help. Thanks Marcus
