MARR ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

Welcome to the home page of Marr Astronomical Society. The society was founded in 2003 to support and promote a wider understanding of astronomy, and associated sciences, and draws its membership from the area of Marr (Deeside & Donside) in Aberdeenshire, north-east Scotland.

The Society is open to all and is aimed at anyone with an interest in astronomy, planetary science and cosmology. We organize observational sessions, whenever the weather permits, and have regular social meetings. Social meetings are scheduled for the last Tuesday of the month and are held from 7:30 pm in the Learney Arms Hotel in Torphins. These usually take the form of wide ranging, informal, discussions on astronomy and associated topics. Observational meets take place throughout the region and notice of these is posted via our marrastro group at Yahoo. With Marr being a largely rural area we have ample opportunity to appreciate truly dark skies and the breathtaking view of the heavens that this allows. Also, many of our observational venues are sites of historical interest!

The marrastro site is our main resource for information on astronomy and is open to members of the society. The site is relatively new but from it members can download material on how to get started in astronomy, access a wide range of useful links and keep up to date via the messaging system. A range of files on more advanced astronomical topics should be available by 2004 and members are welcome to upload astronomically relevant documents and photographs.

If you are interested in joining, or finding out more about, Marr Astronomical Society you should contact the society's secretary, David Pattullo, by email or by writing to the society at the address below.
