In this area you'll find information about my favorite graphics applications and a small gallery of sample pictures I've created. My favorite graphics programs tend to be shareware or freeware and I also use slightly older versions of commercial packages. The higher-priced, full-featured wares are excellent but I find they're often well above my software budget. I'll continue to update the list to include new programs that are worth sharing. 2D
Graphics Programs
Project Dogwaffle OS: Windows Cost: Free - version 1.2, $39 - version 1.4, see the site for other versions Description: A very complete paint program that will meet about 90% of your bitmap graphics needs. Fast, fun, easy to use and upgradeable. I like: the
goofy original name, ease of use, low price, lots of free plug-ins plus
the ability to create your own.
I dislike: very little. It doesn't get much better than this for the price. Corel
Draw Suite
OS: Windows Description: An excellent vector graphics program. Well supported online, even in the older versions. Cost: about $50 - version 12, about $180 - version X3 I like: the wealth of options, loads of fonts, included Corel Photo Paint and Corel Trace utilities I dislike: the fairly steep learning curve. Anime Studio OS: Windows, Mac Description: A very cool graphics program for creating your own animations. Animated objects can be vector or bitmap based. Cost: about $50 - version 5 I like: the ability to import graphics from your favorite paint program. The Included sample characters and tutorials are fun to play with and comprehensive. I dislike: very little so far. I'll need to use it a while to figure out more strong and weak points. 3D
Graphics Programs
Anim8or OS: Windows Cost: Free Description: An excellent free package for creating 3D animations. I like: the
fact that this is free, ease of use, import and export facilities.
I dislike: the slow speed if you try to make a scene too detailed. Occasional stability issues. POV Ray
OS: Windows, Mac, Linux Description: The granddaddy of all 3D rendering applications. Cost: Free I like: the
ability to create photo-realistic scenes, precise control and excellent
support.
I dislike: the need to learn the scripting language to use it effectively. This is seriously geeky stuff. Bryce OS: Windows, Mac Cost: Free - version 5.5 Description: A program that was made for landscapes, but versatile enough for general 3D rendering. I like: the
oddball user interface, beautiful presets, and realistic rendering
engine.
I dislike: the LONG render times for detailed animations. Computer Graphics Gallery Here are a few images created with Bryce, POV
Ray, Anim8or, and Project Dogwaffle.
