This is where you'll find information about the music and audio programs that I like to use and links to sites where you can find reviews, programs and sounds to use on your own. The list of programs is far from comprehensive, but it represents the music tools that I use the most. Music
Programs
Orion OS: Windows Cost: $149 - version 7.5 Description: A complete music studio in a single package. Everything you need to create a your own masterpiece is here, except talent. I like: the included virtual instruments, the ability to use DirectX and VST plug-ins and the staggering set of features. The "kitchen sink" of music software apps. It's not a perfect solution but has enough to stand on its own. I dislike: the fact that Synapse discontinued the lightweight (cheaper) versions of Orion. Acid Music Studio OS: Windows Description: A program for making music using loops. Cost: $54 - version 7.0 I like: how easy Acid makes creating a track from start to finish. Built-in time stretching and pitch-shifting technology keeps everything in key and on the beat. The latest version has support of VST and DirectX effects and VST instruments. This is a stable, mature package with lots of potential. I dislike: the few small limitations. It doesn't support high audio bit/sample rates but all told there's a lot here for about 50 bucks. Cakewalk Music Creator 4 OS: Windows Decription: The latest generation of entry-level music sequencer from music software giant Cakewalk. Cost: $39 - download version $34 I like: the redesigned interface, the wealth of features and impressive lineage (it's a cut-down version of Sonar). This sequencer represnts an extraordinary value for the buck. I use CMC4 to record, mix and master audio and MIDI tracks. I disllike: the lack of support for higher bit/sample rates and limited number of MIDI and audio tracks available. Audacity OS: Windows, Linux, Mac Decription: An excellent open source audio editor. Cost: free I like: the fact that Audacity supports numerous audio file formats. You can edit existing audio files or use Audacity to record sounds. I disllike: that Audacity opens a new window for each sample. I also miss the ability to rip audio from CDs. Sound Forge Audio Studio OS: Windows Description: A highly capable audio editor, with some cool features. Cost: $54 I like: the ability to add Acid info to samples and the ability to rip files from CD. VST and DirectX plug-in support adds value and versatility. I dislike: the lack of higher bit/sample rate support. Music
