WASHINGTON MAN PAINTS FLAGPOLES IN LISBON

Taken from the Ransom County Gazette / July 17th, 2006

Warren Hinrichs, 65, really likes to paint. The Washington native travels anywhere west of the Mississippi and Wisconsin and paints flag poles in small towns. This is his 47th year doing this. After high school Hinrichs started painting. He made $2.50 per house. Back in 1959 the minimum wage was $.70 per hour. He started painting water towers and smokestacks before turning to poles at the age of 20. Hinrichs has painted over 4,000 flag poles during his lifetime. He does about 200-300 each year. Hinrichs dog, Coca, travels with him and was tied to a tree outside the Veterans Home while Hinrichs was painting. Hinrichs has been married for 24 years and has five grown children. One live in Germany and the other four live in Washington state. He is currently teaching his oldest son how to painted flagpoles. He visits Lisbon about every three years. The next time he will be here, it will be 100 years of business for his family.
