What is Princess Tutu?
Princess Tutu is an animated japanese show, or anime, which originally aired from August 16th 2002 to June 28th 2003 on Japanese television. The story came to a close at 26 episodes.
The anime is catagorized under 'shojo', a term commonly used to mean "For Girls". This statement, however, is untrue in the sense that this anime can literally be enjoyed by all ages; which has been proved by my own personal experience and countless reviews on Amazon.com, stating things such as the fact that their 65 year old Father enjoyed it. Similarly, a friend of mine who is 19 years old was instantly hooked on the series; as was my 48 year old Father, who usually only likes heavy action anime.
Though the name of the series often discourages viewers, this show is not to be underestimated. It is, in my personal opnion, the best anime ever made; even outranking the most popular titles. The storyline is deep, complicated, poignant and uplifting; and, at times, quite dark. Even though this show is acceptable for all ages to view, it does have some surprisingly gothic themes. However, the overall theme of the show is defying fate, love, hope, justice and helping others.
The events of the series and the complexity of the characters could very well be discussed for hours. Every character, even the villian, is layered and easy to empathize with. No character is treated as one dimensional, and in fact, the 'villian' of the series, Princess Kraehe, is perhaps the most complicated anime character ever divised; an opnion seconded by Wikipedia.
Princess Tutu is, most definately, a work of art all of it's own. Though it borrows themes and bits of stories from existing ballet, it's overall story is unique. Honestly, I haven't been able to find anything that even compares with the depth and beauty of the show.

Though I could go on for pages and pages, Wikipedia has more information than I could ever hope to offer. If you haven't seen Princess Tutu yet, I would suggest with all of my heart that you do. Take a chance. I promise you that it will be worth it.
