An alternative more optimistic suggestion is that what is missing from the debate is a proper understanding of the concept “freedom.” A better understanding of that concept on this view would allow us to see which of the participants in the political debate are really speaking of the thing that our shared notion of freedom picks out. We could hence say which of the parties to the disagreement about freedom is correct without begging the question against all the others. Those who are shown to be incorrect might then be expected to change their political opinions or at least admit that theirs are not the views that champion freedom in the sense in which we normally understand it. To get such a story started we would need michigan refinance a theory of freedom that could be accepted by those who occupy a range of political perspectives. It should not be an overly moralized account the arguments in its favor should not presuppose any controversial moral judgments. When speaking of the things that inhibit an individual’s freedom philosophers often have in mind the constraints that are put in place by other people.
