Rumsfeld was very friendly with Saddam Hussein in the '80's...
Top reasons why the US is invading Iraq:
- "To liberate the people of Iraq." Are the 100+ other dictatorships around the world awaiting imminent invasion as well? Will the fighting ever end? Does the US know exactly how every government on earth should be run?
- "The people will rise up to overthrow the regime." Why should they trust us? Bush Sr. betrayed the Kurds after urging them to rise up. The US has been bombing and blockading Iraq for over a decade, killing well over a million civilians, according to the UN. After Iraq is brought under the absolute rule of an American general, what will happen if the vast majority favors policies that the Bush Administration doesn’t? Will elections be canceled or undermined, like the US did in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Vietnam? So far, the Iraqis are welcoming the US soldiers with bullets and angry demands, not flowers and jubilance.
- "Saddam Hussein may have WMD." He did, and they were supplied by US and European companies. There is no proof that those weapons or their components still exist. Former weapons inspector Scott Ritter has stated years ago that "Iraq is qualitatively disarmed." The US and dozens of other countries definitely have WMD.
- "Saddam Hussein has used WMD and will use them again." He has used WMD during the war with Iran. The US has used WMD and has threatened the "first-use" of nukes against seven nations, including China. Saddam Hussein can be contained effectively by the UN. Most of the world’s people are now trying to contain the Bush administration’s unilateral bullying.
- "Iraq may give WMD to Bin Laden or others who would attack America." Elements of Saddam’s regime may have met with Al Quaeda agents a couple of times over the past two decades. This means Saddam Hussein might be as close to Osama as he is to Donald Rumsfeld! Bin Laden has made it clear that he sees Hussein as one of many secular despots that needs to be toppled. Hussein may be evil, but he is rational, and would not have risked cooperating with Islamic militants. Unfortunately, there will now probably be no shortage of hijackers and suicide bombers from around the world eager to attack American targets at every level.
