Tutorial 1

A Purpley-Blue Coloring

We'll be going from this to this in about seven steps. I use PSP XI, I'm not sure if it will be the same for earlier versions or Photoshop.

1. Choose your picture, lighter pictures will probably work best. I chose this picture of Natalie Portman. Crop it, sharpen it, etc.

2. Duplicate your base image and set the blend mode to softlight at 100%.

3. Make a new raster layer and fill it in with a dark purple-blue color, I used #2b048c. Set it to Lighten at 28%.

4. Make another raster layer and fill this one in with a golden yellow like #f4d042. Set it to Multiply at 50%.

5. Go to Layers - New Adjustment Layer - Curves. Mess around with the RGB settings (I made it brighter) and the blue setting. This is what your layers palette should look like now.

6. Go back and duplicate your base again, and drag it all the way to the top. Go to Adjust - Hue and Saturation - Colorize. Make sure that the Saturation level is at 0, hue doesn't matter (it's grey now). Set this layer on Burn at 20%.

7. Go to Layers - New Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation/Lightness. Mess with the settings - this is what I used:
Masters: 28
Yellows: -40
Cyans: 28
Blues: 19
Whatever I left out is on 0, and these settings are meant for the Saturation level and nothing else. Hope you like the end result!
