'The Hobbit' To Start Production Immediately

Dec 18, 2007, 10:56 AM | by Vanessa Juarez

Hollywood Insider just received word from New Line and MGM that everything has been resolved in The Hobbit debacle between Peter Jackson (pictured) and New Line. Jackson will executive produce the pic for a 2010 release, but the studios are still in search of director. Production on The Hobbit will begin immediately, though no script has been written, which means they will have to work around the strike. A rep for MGM says, "This is a slamdunk for everybody."

In a New Line press release to be sent out today, Peter Jackson says , “I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey.”

Could the ice really be melting?

Entertainment Weekly has been sticking fingers into the situation on possibilities of The Hobbit becoming a movie. We (the fans) know it's coming. We just do! Perhaps in the midst of our constant hysteria of not knowing when or how, or even if, the movie would be produced, we overlooked the enourmous amount of lawsuits between P.J. and the companies he's worked with/for, and for what else but ownership rights and money.

There has been huge disputes between Jackson and the would-be producers of the movie, so it's taking much longer to settle the fued than it would to actually come up with a screenplay (which by the way hasn't been written yet). New Line has started offering the part of director to other candidates like Sam Raimi, director of Spiderman. And while the fans scream "NO!" even these directors are sheepish about stepping into P.J.'s shoes. And why shouldn't they be? Everyone knows he's the only man for the job. It's obvious how many people New Line will upset if they choose another director just because it's more convenient for them. If they want a good movie, Jackson is the one to give it to them.

Frankly, anybody else would be a secondary choice. It won't be the movie people want.

Well, they've got that right.

Recently, New Line's lawsuit fury is thawing out to a cool mist, so P.J. might get the chance after all.

Let's cross our fingers and hope.

Basics

"The Children of Húrin takes the reader back to a time long before The Lord of the Rings, in an area of Middle-earth that was to be drowned before Hobbits appeared, and when the great enemy was still the fallen Vala, Morgoth, and Sauron was only Morgoth's lieutenant. This heroic romance is the tale of the Man, Húrin, who dared to defy Morgoth's force of evil, and his family's tragic destiny, as it follows his son Túrin Turambar's travels through the lost world of Beleriand..."

J.R.R. Tolkien's "new' book "The Children of Hurin" is not a book with a happy ending like the Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, nor is it anywhere near as fun to read. The ending left me as cheerful as Oedipus Rex did. Nevertheless, Tolkien's elevated (or should I say "archaic"?) style of writing and his heroic characters never cease to please this reader. I recommend this book only to devoted Tolkien fans or lovers of mythology.

Being a huge Tolkien fan I wanted this book in a bad kinda way. Having just finished the Silmarillion for the third time this book came in the mail. I was hugely dissapointed. How can Christopher Tolkien use the Tolkien world just to put out this book and make money? Please don't do it again Chris!! My guess is that about 90% of this is WORD FOR WORD copy of the Silmarillion. My advice, don't buy this. The remaining 10% is filler not worth having. Buy the Silmarillion and learn the entire history of Middle Earth.
