Getting to know the driver..............

 

Thanks for visiting our site, we'd like to give you a brief background history of Tom's racing career.   In 1967 - 1970, Tom  competed in 4-hour hair scrambles at Sawdey’s racetrack in Addison, MI.  This competition included cross-country enduro racing on motorcross bikes.  Finished & placed in top five positions.  Below is a photo of Tom at Sawdey's.

In 1970 - 1973,  Tom competed in amateur Dirt Track / Flat Track Motorcycle Races.  Tracks were ¼ mile, ½ mile and T.T. tracks.  Tom raced at Millbourgh Speedway in Benton Harbor, MI * Delta Motorsports in Delta, OH * Niles, MI * Clarksville, MI and at Victor Park in Milan, MI where he finished 3rd overall of 70 participants for the year.  In 1973 - 1977, at the age of 18 Tom received his Professional Dirt Track license through American Motorcycles Association. He raced for four years following a complete racing circuit on ½ mile fairground tracks.  Tracks were located in Zanesville, OH * Marion, OH * Springfield, OH * Columbus, OH * Butler, IN * Northville Downs Track, Detroit, MI * Memorial Stadium, Daytona Beach, FL and at Louisville Downs in Louisville, KY.  Tom also raced at an indoors short track at the State Fairgrounds in Detroit MI.  Finished & placed with approximately 70 participants in the top 25.

In 1977 - 1978, Tom was sponsored by Knutsons Recreation Sales out of Brooklyn, MI where he became a Professional Snowmobile Racer.  Tom competed in Ironwood, MI in the Upper Peninsula and at Whiskey Creek racetrack located in Muskegon, MI.  Below is a photo of Tom, (right) and his good friend Dave Turk, who was also sponsored by Knutsons.

In 1978 - 1984, Tom went back to Amateur Dirt Track Racing and began promoting ice racing with Southern Michigan Racing Series. This type of racing consists of motorcycles and ATV racing on ice.  Here is a photo of Tom, (inside) and his brother, John Thomas.

From 2003 to 2006, Tom competed in Championship Off Road Racing, Sportsman Series.   In 2007, a new racing series developed, Lucas Oil World Series of Off Road Racing.  Tom will begin his first year competing in W.S.O.R.R. in the Sportsman Series, Light Buggy Division.  Below is the buggy Tom currently races with.

In 1984, Tom purchased his first dune buggy and began participating in family-orientated trail riding with the Michigan Sport Buggy Association.   Tom was elected president of the association in 1991 and again in 1992.   Tom competed for 4 years in a hill climb event with a Sandrail buggy at Silver Lake, MI, which was sponsored by M.S.B.A.  Tom has owned 5 different dune buggies and of these, he has built two of them.  Tom has also owned three Baja’s bugs.   Tom is a certified motorcycle and snowmobile technician.  He is still a member of M.S.B.A. and rides the trails of northern Michigan with his buggy trail car.   See our Out West page to view the TomKat buggy.  Tom has grown up surrounded by racing as his father, brother and my sister all competed in the National Championship Motorcycle Endurance Run, the famous Jack Pine 500.  Tom has been employed with Coca-Cola Enterprises as a Service Technician for over 25 years.   He understands and know the value of a company name & trademark and stands behind them 100%.   Tom is a highly competitive, very organized individual who enjoys the sport of racing.
