11-20-09 Mall Show

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 09:14 AM on November 20, 2009 Comments comments (0)

We played a most epic show  at the mall a few weeks ago, chronicaled on the Advocateweekly. hurrah for more press. The show was fully distorted and on a stage in the center court. We had a good turn out, and the fact that we were able to do this the way we did makes me very happy.

We're looking into the hot topic band grant at the moment, a grant awarded to a band each year in a district reagon of hot topic. The grant is a decent chunk of money, like a few thousand  dollars, about enough to make a very well done album. We're really hoping to get it as we could use that money so god damn bad. more on this later...

8-29-09 New Shit

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 04:14 PM on August 29, 2009 Comments comments (0)

so, It's finally done - "Something Stirs, Something Tries..." our new Ep Featuring "Flood" and "Hypnagogia". We got the final tracks recorded, mixed, and mastered by our old buddy Mike from RQR. We've even got all the art done for the jewel case. All thats left to do is package it and order some. I think the idea was 30 copies. 6 of which would be for us, a handful for fans who want the real packaged deal and the rest to send out to record companies. Speaking of which we were contacted by an AR rep while in the studio. The deal consists of a $600 down payment but a life long promotion contract which means our EPs will be in the hands of the right people in the industry (this includes commercial promotion: I.E. Movies, Games, And TV). This option is open to us whenever we feel it necissary. I mean of course it'd be best to prevent someone else getting a cut of our money, so we'll try to avoid this as much as possible, but if this company meets it's end of the deal we'd pretty much be set. In other news on the record front: We've been looking into Equal Vision Records quite a bit, And we have some mutual friends in high places at the company. Hopefully that will pan out if anything. Finally, We're still waiting to get back to Hellion Records about "Birth's" packaging and distribution.

8-15-09 Endless Shows

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 01:48 PM on August 15, 2009 Comments comments (0)
We've lined up a crap ton of shows for this month. Each weekend will have atleast one show to be played, and the prospect of new towns, new faces, new bands, and new venues sounds like a great time. Hopefully we can keep this momentum up. In other news: new shirts are in the plans, we're looking into things like buttons and posters, and new material is on the way. Patterns In The Sky will likely be debuted this month, and song ideas for the third album are already in the works. We need to fucking record, -Nate

8-10-09 Rock On! Camp Interview

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 01:56 PM on August 10, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Q: So I get the sense that you guys started out at the Rock On band camp. did the band actually start at rock on or was it a separate project altogether? What was the lineup back then when you started?

A: Yes, we formed in 2006 at band camp. Nate and Joe came up to me (Anders) and said, "Hey, dude, do you wanna start a shred-metal band?" Without hesitation I was like, hell yeah, this could be cool. I recruited Zack and former bassist Dillon Ethier from the band I was in at the time and we had a full outfit. We wrote and recorded Krakatoa at our first practice and decided it was meant to be. We quit our other bands and made Warsynium official. However, Dillon went to college and we went through two more bassists before finding Nik.

Q: how many of you attended rock on? how many sessions did you guys attend and what was the biggest lessons you learned from the workshops? any particularly fond memories? what was your set like at the end-of-session concert?

A: I think we all attended Rock On at some point. Most of us went for at least 2 or 3 years. I believe the most important lesson learned was that, as a musician, you need to find bandmates that you really click with. Fellow musicians with similar goals and interests that you respect and respect you back. Some of our best memories were in the cafeteria goofing around, and during the end-of-session concerts. But honestly the whole time we were there was just amazing. Playing music and hanging out with friends all day for two weeks made for an unforgettable experience. For the concert at the end of the week, we were actually in different bands. Zack and I were in one band while Nate and Joe were in another. But we liked eachother's playing styles and wanted to start something new.

Q: why power metal? what is it about massive solos, flowing locks and the whole dark vibe that got you all hooked?

A: For us, Power metal was something so epic and extreme, that it inspired us create something of our own. It was the giants of the classical era, such as Vivaldi and Paganini, that made us want to shred as well. Bands like Hammerfall, Queensryche and Dragonforce were the staples of our musical diet at the time. At the same time, however, we recognized a certain cheesyness about the genre. We didn't want to follow a trend or go along the same beaten path. Thrash has always been a big part of our sound and we tried to incorporate it more with each song we wrote. We called it Power-thrash. If you listen to our debut album, Warsynium I, you will notice how the music progresses from the more straightforward power-metal first half, to the darker, more progressive, and thrashier second half.

Q: i recall devan gardner joining you guys at a show at the ITAM to sing "crazy train" before i was aware of him being in the band. when did the inclusion of devan in the band become official? what unique characteristics does he bring to the band that weren't there before?

A: Hahaha yeah we had Devan jump in multiple times to sing along to Crazy Train. The first time being at the PNA in Adams in a spur of the moment kind of deal. That was a long time ago, but Devan was officially included in the band in late 2008. We released him to the public in our interview with the Berkshire Eagle in March '09 and he performed his first official show with us soon after. Devan gives us the versatility of a stand alone frontman. He can run around and pump up the crowd while Nate and Joe shred their brains out. He has a great voice and can hit those glass shattering falsetto notes, as well the vicious Pantera style screams. Zack and Joe continue to do lead and backing vocals, which adds some pleasant harmony to the mix. Also, with our riffs becoming much more technical, Zack deserved a break from all the singing, allowing him to focus more on guitar.

Q: im sure i could venture some guesses as to what your major influences are, but what bands or musicians have driven you guys to make the music that you make?

A: Our list of influences is innumerable. But a big part of it started with your classics: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth etc. We each take inspiration from different individual musicians as well. It seems each of us is always into something a little different, but we share our interests and accept our diversity as a gift. Some of the stuff we're listening to now: Between the Buried and Me, Fear Before, Opeth, Isis, Pelican, I Wrestled a Bear Once, Speak of the Horse, and When I Came Back From Death.

Q: what's the hardest part about being a metal band? i'm sure there are countless other metal bands trying to do exactly what you're doing. what makes warsynium stand out?

A: For our second album, we've been writing much more experimental, technical, and progressive music. So far we have yet to encounter a band doing anything close. By incorporating jazz, fusion, and a variety of other unconventional styles into our music, we've begin to craft a new and unique sound. The hardest part isn't the writing or playing- that's the best part. The hard part is treating the band like a business. We have to manage ourselves and work our asses off to promote and get our music heard. We want nothing more than to get our music to the masses.

Berkshire teenage supergroup holds its own!

By Patty Seifert

December 2008

It's been one year since our first article (below) with Warysnium. They have been keeping very busy and continue to gain attention, not only in the Berkshires but in surrounding areas.

They released their long-anticipated CD on October 31, 2008. Anders (drummer) states, "Our music writing has been getting more and more in depth with its instrumental technicality and rhythmic progressiveness. We've been steering away from the clichés associated with power metal and incorporating unexpected twists and turns into our songs, making them more interesting and original.

Although it's a bit early to start thinking about a second album, they already have three songs written for it and are working on more. "Dedicated listeners of ours will find these songs much heavier for the most part than the material on our debut. Moreover, we've been experimenting with the fusion of jazz and other un-traditional ingredients that people don't usually connect to metal."

Warsynium continuously play throughout the Berkshires. They have played several times at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY, and played the Webster Theatre in Hartford, CT over the summer. They also took the "Young Band" category in the Best of 2007 contest at My 411 Source, appeared on their compilation CD, and played at their 1st Annual Berkshire Music Showcase.

Personal successes include Anders, Nate, Zack and Nic graduating from high school. Joe is a senior at Wahconah High School. Anders is attending UMASS Amherst working towards bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Nik and Nate are attending Berkshire Community College with Zack enrolling there in the Spring.

The band plans to spread their wings east across Massachusetts now that Anders is at UMass. We will use this as a stepping stone to enter the scene in Northampton and Springfield areas. We also hope to start getting some air time at local and college radio stations. At the time of the writing of this article, they were scheduled to play at a Blastermonkey Entertainment show at The Atlantic in Springfield December 12.

Warsynium: Berkshire Power Metal

By Patty Seifert & Nate Calebaugh

September 2007

Warsynium is a local, teenage supergroup of sorts blending the speed and aggression of Thrash-Metal and Power-Metal with Progressive Technicallity. Consisting of Nate Calebaugh (lead, rhythm guitars and vocals), Zack Orcutt (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joe Haryanto (lead, rhythm guitars), Nik Viola (bass, vocals) and Anders Olson (drums), they incorporate influences from all across traditional western classical and eastern exotic music alike. To learn more about these young men who are amazing local show goers and even some area music veterans, I spoke with Nate.

411: How did you meet?

Nate: We've all known each other for a very long time. We never all actually got together until high school though. At that time I was in a band called Calypso with Zack, Joe was in a band called Tyranarchy, and Anders was in a band called Triton. Nik was a drifter whom we picked up sometime later.

411: Where did you come up with the name Warsynium?

Nate: That's a bit of a secret, but i can tell you this: it's the name of a town in a work of fiction we all enjoy (slightly modified of course).

411: Describe your music.

Nate: We play original music all over the metal and rock spectrum and draw influence from very unlikely sources. Our sound revolves a lot on harmonies lines and counterpoint lines created with the three guitarists with fast bass and faster drums. We like to surprise people and we like to be as original as possible.

411: What are your influences?

Nate: We listen to a lot of thrash bands (Metallica, Megadeth, and Testament) power metal bands (Edguy, Helloween, Dragonforce, Hammerfall) and then spice things up with influences from classical composers (Vivaldi, Paganini, Bach, Mozart), exotic scales and sounds, and all sorts of strange out there stuff you wouldn't expect from a metal band.

411:What is your goal as a band?

Nate: Just making a decent living from gigs and merch and things like that is good enough. As long as we get to share our music with whoever likes to hear it. Of course we'd also love to play huge arenas and make millions, but of course we're not THAT optimistic.

411:Where do you see yourselves in 2 years?

Nate: We will all have graduated high school. So we plan to have "Warsynium I" out by then. We've been talking about moving to a bigger city once we graduate, and trying to get bigger shows. If all goes well we'll have a second CD out as well, or at least in the making, and we'll be doing constant gigs.

411: I see you've been recording - When can we expect to hear from Warsynium?

Nate: We've had a demo out for a while now, but it has limited prints and none of us are really pleased with the recording quality of it. Warsynium is recording their debut EP.

8-6-09 Warsynium for Deutchland

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 02:47 PM on August 06, 2009 Comments comments (0)

So we got contacted by a distributor named Hellion Records. They're interested in distributing our first album "Birth" overseas in Germany and on top of that they plan on professionally pressing/packaging the album. We looked into it and Hellion is the distributor for a handful of big bands including Warbringer, so we're kinda stoked. Everything seems legit so we hope it all works out, who knows we may even get some cash out of it. We're starting off small, 50 cds are being pressed. half are being shipped overseas and half are being kept in Pittsfield for local distribution. We'll all keep a copy I'm assuming, so that means that 19 lucky fans will be able to purchase a professionally pressed and packaged copy of our debut album. We're still going to continue to sell the CD-R version of the album at standard price, but at the next few shows we'll be offering the premium version at a $15-ish price. We're not sure if/when we're going to press more of these so this may be a rare one shot deal, so if you've always wanted a pro copy of "Birth", now's your chance.

The EP will likely be temporarily postponed. We have a crap ton of money now from shows and merch, but Mike is in recording limbo a the moment. We're not positive what is up but he finally got back to us telling us that he can't record at RQR anymore, and Skyboro too is likely out of the question now. So we have no idea what's up.

7-15-09 Major Updates

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 01:59 AM on July 15, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Hey everyone, I made a major update today by removing the old home page and replacing it with this News Page to better organize my ramblings. Also updated the Discography page. I added links to each track of our full length releases that will lead you to a seperate lyrics page. It's kind of neat and took me like an hour, so check it out. I've also made some huge improvments to the site overall. I added an advanced Merch page and an advanced Photo Album. Overall I think the site is coming along nicely. It's getting a bit more professional each time i update it. I'm still hoping to buy the domain Warsynium.com, but we've been taking awhile looking into prices and wondering how good of an investment the site name is at the moment. This site doesn't get much traffic, granted that's partly because we don't really advertise the site at all. I'm just worried that after we purchase the domain that the site continues to get as much traffic as this site. All and all it's a hard decision.

In addition to that, we've had a little downtime lately. We had almost a month long break from shows, before the streak was broken Saturday by the last Hot Carl's show we had. It was a good show. Every band was really top notch. I was a little worried about the show since a lot of my favorite local bands like Speak of The Horse, When i Came Back From Death, and Throwing Aces couldn't make it, but the new faces pulled it off and the returning vets were great. We'll also be returning to Skyboro Studios soon to finish the EP which is now titled "Something Sturs, Something Tries". We need to lay down my parts, the vocals, and touch up some of the other guitars and maybe the bass? The album itself, "Patterns In The Sky", is just about complete. We finished all the songs, but we still don't really have a set ending to "Celestial Dawn" and the title track "Patterns In The Sky". Also we haven't titled the intro and outros yet, or necissarily confirmed how the tracks will be. We have the skeletons, and a bunch of ideas which we already demoed, but the songs themselves will likely be different in the studio.

Up next is the show at Adams Turn Hall this Saturday, come on out.

Fuuuuuuuuck,

-Nate

5-3-09 Success On Fifth Song!

warsynium Posted by warsynium at 01:58 AM on July 15, 2009 Comments comments (0)

We had practice on this fine Sunday and have finally finished completing our 5th song for Warsynium 2nd upcoming album! We decided to even record it on our sick new PA system through Joe's laptop and it came out a lot better than I thought! The main reason is to figure how the vocals will sound throughout the song. However, there is still a name for the song to be chosen as well. I have to say, this song will blow some people's minds, another song with a whole lot of types of music involved, so I hope you guys are ready for what we have in stored!

Peace out world!

-Zorcutt
