~ Alpha Scout`
Many years ago, humans inhabited every land and nation....or so they thought. There was one nation they didn't discover-- an island just off the coast of
"The humans are going to invade our land," said Scout to her father, the alpha. "We have to do something!"
"I, along with the rest of the DecemberSky pack, am staying right here," said the alpha.
"Then I will find new lands myself!" said Scout. Most of the other wolves thought Scout was crazy, but she was determined. She and her siblings- Bear, Kid, and Nashya (na-shy-ya), set off into the forest to find new land free of humans.
But as soon as they entered the forest, they were met by a huge mother bear. She was not very happy about the wolves stumbling upon her territory, on which she was raising cubs. She roared at the four wolves. They turned to run away from her, But she was too quick. She reached out to pick up Nashya, amd she bit the mighty bear's paw. The bear threw Nashya up against a tree, and she was instantly knocked unconscious. Bear and Kid dragged Nashya away, as Scout held the bear back.
Scout lunged at the bear. The bear scratched Scout across the right side of her face, but it did not manage to keep Scout from attacking. She bit its neck and tightened her grip. After only a few seconds, she realized that he was about to kill a mother. He knew that by killing a mother, she was also killing a baby or possibly two. She was too kind-hearted to do that. She let go and ran off to find her family before the bear had time to get up. She found her friends about at a beach. Kid was licking Nashya's wounds to ease the pain.
Bear came over to Scout. "I think there is an island down that way."
Scout looked, and, sure enough, there was an island. It was just far enough that a human couldn't see it, but a wolf with its keen eyesight could. But how to get to it? Scout looked around for days. she looked into the water one day and noticed a strange sandbar. It was very long, and it started right near shore and went out a long way. How it came to be there, nobody knows. But it was a strange thing to see.
Scout turned to her friends and said, "Bear and I will go across to the island. I think I found a path. Nashya, you are too hurt to cross with us. It would be far too dangerous for you. Kid, you stay with her. She'll need someone to take care of her."
So Bear and Scout set off across the sandbar, carefully making sure each step was not the end of the path. Scout looked across the water and saw several shark fins. (This was, of course, before the Great Shark Migration, but you know all about that, right?) "Watch out for sharks," said Scout. Bear nodded.
A few minutes later, Scout heard Bear make a sound, as if about to say something. Then there was a splash. Scout whirled around to find that Bear was gone. A shark had taken him! Scout frantically searched the water for any signs of Bear. About 30 feet out, she saw Bear's head pop out of the water for a second and then go back under. It didn't come up again.
Scout then realized there was nothing she could do. She couldn't swim very well, and it would be suicide to take on a huge shark by herself. So she sadly continued on, trying to fight back the tears.
Continuing on by herself across the rest of the sandbar, she saw a few sharks in the distance. She was careful to watch them and make sure they didn't get too close. But a little while later, she could see the shore of the island! Her eyes set on the target, she ran straight ahead. She stepped on a sharp rock and tripped. It was not a serious injury, just a small cut on her paw. She continued on. But before she knew it, a shark was right by her! It had smelled the blood from her cut!
The shark tried to bite Scout, but she took off like a speeding bullet. The shark managed to scrape her leg. It followed Scout as she ran. She turned back to see if the shark was gone. Suddenly, there was a little turn in the sandbar. She ran right off the edge, and then he found out that the shark wasn't gone. It came up bit Scout's hurt leg, but this time it didn't let go. Scout turned and bit the sharks nose. This gave her enough time to get to the surface for air, but soon the shark had her leg again. She thought about all the things she had heard about shark attacks. She remembered one of the nicer elders telling her when she was a pup, "If you get enough force straight on a shark's nose, it will pass out."
So Scout whirled as fast as she could under the water, and her force stunned the shark, but didn't knock it unconscious. She swam with all her might. The shore was just in sight. She inched closer, but the shark was gaining on her. "I have to do this for Bear!" she told himself. This gave her the extra energy she needed. She scrambled up on the shore and looked back. If she had been a foot further away, the shark would have gotten her! she watched as the shark swam away, before collapsing on the shore, breathing hard and fast. she just lay there for almost an hour, thinking about Bear. She wished she had been there to save her best friend. But then she thought, "Bear wouldn't want me to mope about his death. He would want me to show this island to the rest of the pack."
So that's what Scout did. First, she searched the island. It was beautiful! There was a cluster of hills in the center, surrounding a valley with a large hotspring in the southern corner. Scout took a long drink from it. Then she noticed a deer across the spring. She followed it, hoping there were more deer. As she looked around the island, she found there were a lot of prey animals! There were plenty of rabbits, deer, moose, and squirrels. Scout caught a rabbit for her dinner.
After staying on the island for about a week, her leg was healed. She ran across the sandbar, and she didn't meet any sharks. When she came back, Kid and Nashay were waiting for her.. "What took you so long?" asked Nashya, excited to see her sister. "But where's Bear?" asked Kid.
Scout told them the whole story. She was sad about Bear, but she was excited about the island, which was perfect for the pack! So she, Nashya, and Kid set off to bring the pack to the island.
When the pack found out, they loved the island. They wanted to call it Scout Island, but Scout, being the humble and loving wolf that she was, wanted to call it DecemberSkies Island as a memorial to Bear, who always treasured the month of December and sat out every night watching the sky, which always lit up with the northern lights aurora. Finally, they agreed to call it DecemberSkies, named after the pack. They lived there happily with Scout was their alpha.
